I loved this. I need a minute to process it all, honestly. But I loved it.
EDIT: Ok I'm back after a few days and I have my wits about me. This book was a huge undertaking. It's the sequel to There There, but it traces both the ancestors of Orvil Redfeather back several generations and also picks up after the shooting at the end of There There. I don't know how Tommy Orange did it, but he gave each character such a unique voice and story style. I knew immediately who I was reading about, and I was equally invested in everyone. We got more Opal, more Jacky, obviously more Orvil, but we also got additional characters in the present day timeline, and we got four members of Orvil's family.
This book had something to say about how we define ourselves, how we view ourselves, what our choices say about us, but in the end it's all about this family and how they always find their way back to each other. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

Not really sure how I feel about Wandering Stars. It's definitely good, but I think I might read There There and this back to back at some point down the line. But also what happened to Edwin? I don’t think we ever found out
Graphic: Addiction, Drug abuse, Racism, and Suicide attempt
Moderate: Alcoholism, Genocide, Self harm, and Colonisation
Minor: Mass/school shootings

I think it’s a 5 star book, but for me, a 4.5. It was beautifully and brilliantly written. It taught me a lot of historical context, and tells so many important stories. I struggle with reading about addiction, so it wasn’t a 5-star read simply in my experience with it. I highly recommend it though!

This was hard to get through for several reasons: It’s about difficult (but important) topics. There are so many characters (several with the same name). The middle dragged. But the first part was quite gripping and the tragedy of inter-generational trauma was well done.
