I feel like I should have loved this book - female led fantasy with a big focus on world building! But I DNF'd at 30% because I was just so bored. Nothing is happening and I feel nothing for the characters - not even dislike. Normally I DNF because of bad writing - not the case here. The writing is fine, there is just no compelling plot or characters.

3.5 rounded down.

I really wanted to like this book, the world building is very interesting. But I could not feel anything for any of the characters. When I was expected to feel for some sort of plot twist or emotion, there was nothing. None of the characters trusted each other and they only had one goal in mind.

I would have loved more of the world building or any two characters to say "yes I trust you" and mean it just once. Every analogy was linked back to either a Price or a Game and it got tiring.

This book is quite the epitome of YA fantasy, though with a tad of a queer twist. It was an enjoyable read though it lacked depth and went through all the same tropes as other YA fantasies. The ending was quite surprising though a second book has been writ which will probably round that storyline. Not that I'll read it. This book was fun as is but let's just keep it at this book.

Solid start to a promising trilogy. In a fantasy market where Russo-Slavic folklore is the new hotness, it was refreshing to see the Firebird treated with a bit more originality.

I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t as strong as I feel it could’ve been. The magic system was unique, and I think that the Firebird is a very intriguing story to retell. At some points Isa felt a bit week and her motivations weren’t entirely backed up, but the twin dynamic was interesting to explore throughout that.

I loved that this was a sapphic enemies (? maybe more of a dislike?) to lovers. The cliffhanger was pretty excited, and I will most likely read the next book.
