I’m not one to read much about history but a memoir or autobiography will pull me in everytime. This gave me insights into Auschwitz that I shy from reading about because of the material. But making myself uncomfortable by reading pages of someone’s journey through hell is the least I can do to educate myself. The way he describes silence in different tones is moving in itself. Will be a re read for sure as well as a recommendation to everyone I know

HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION**
How can someone give a rating less than 5 stars? I wanted to rate this book 10 pages in. The horrors Elie Weisel faced as a teenager are indescribable. Every time you thought the brutality of the nazi officers and even some of the prisoners couldn't get worse, it did tenfold. This indispensable account of life under Hitler's rein is important for every human on earth to understand and fear. The fear of the evil that is possible should help us stand together and treat each other with kindness compassion and respect. This is definitely a book that will stay with me for life. RIP Elie Weisel and thank you for sharing your story.

This novel was put on the "Most Depressing" for a reason. Elie did a great job and his story was thought provoking.

"If we forget, we are guilty, we are accomplices."
I read this on January 27th, Holocaust Remembrance Day. It's brutal, honest, and heart breaking. I pray that history never repeats itself with a horror such as this.

A vivid portrait of the horrors of the Holocaust and survival. But most importantly, it is a perfect example of serving all that and still believing in peace. The quote above is from his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, where he addresses the Palestinian plight by saying, "Violence is not the answer. Terrorism is the most dangerous of answers." Yet his words did not once diminish their suffering; instead, his words were filled with empathy. Later, he says, "What all these victims need above all is to know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the quality of our freedom depends on theirs."
Wiesel understood the importance of Israel; he also understood the need for Palestinian self-determination. We must find a way forward with empathy.

Prior to this, my limited knowledge of the holocaust was based off of watching Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds and Indiana Jones. I had no clue what prisoners of Auschwitz and other camps and Wiesel describes it with such intensity that really opened my eyes to what happened behind the gates of concentration camps.

It was well written and meaningful except this is the third jews in death camp books I've read in the last few months so the story and the weight of the story have been diminished by the fact that this is a theme in the books I've read rather then a unique heart rending story.
