After a slow start, I really adored this. I think that’s almost entirely due to the male love interest who is utterly swoonworthy. It’s worth reading just for him.

... "𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘪 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶."

I never expected to like "People We Meet On Vacation," a book that, if you've spent any time at all in the #bookstagram or #booktube community, you know all about. I thought I knew all about it, too, and then I finally read it, and lo and behold, it became a five star read. I loved Alex and Poppy's dynamic; their banter, the tension between them, but also they both were so compelling as characters to me. I thought that their separate stories only strengthened the believability of their relationship. They each had family baggage, but still LOVE their family beyond words, and I love that detail so much. Their banter had me cracking up from the prologue all the way to the epilogue, and if I wasn't laughing, I was crying - and not just a little tear here and there. You know the kind of tears where you're hiccuping and you can't even see? Yeah, those kind. I don't remember the last time a book genuinely had me hugging a pillow and weeping, but somehow Emily Henry got it out of me. This chemistry just made me want to scream my head off and highlight on almost every page. Side note, at one point, Alex is reading a book by one of my favorite authors, Sarah Waters. This was destiny.

What else? Every time Poppy was sad, it felt like I was personally being stabbed and then having the knife twisted, so there's that, too!

I know that there are criticisms around this book because of its lack of diversity, and those are valid concerns, and concerns that I have, as well. I don't want anyone to walk away from this review thinking that I don't care about this issue: I do. Although I did give this book 5 stars for how strongly it effected me, I do think the book could've benefitted from a MAIN character who was queer or a person of color. Or both!

Ugh this book was even better the second time around. 😍😭🥰🫠 I don’t know how Emily Henry does it, but she packs so much into each of her books.

Yes, I still cried during the last couple chapters. 😭 She just has such a way with words that you feel like you’re in the story feeling all of their emotions. I will read anything and everything she writes.

I enjoyed Henry’s debut, Beach Read, but it wasn’t a fave of my reading year at the time. People We Meet on Vacation was such a fun and satisfying reading experience that Emily Henry is now an auto-buy author for me, and I feel inclined to go back to Beach Read and see if I appreciate it more on a second reading.

People We Meet on Vacation is probably my favourite romance read of the year, and I’ve read a lot of wonderful romances.

What’s memorable about it? At the top of the list has to be the way Henry conveys the connection between Alex and Poppy. Their banter… is the gold standard of banter. When I wasn’t laughing out loud I had a satisfied smile on my face through so many of the scenes where Poppy and Alex are just talking. Their dynamic is completely believable.

The writing is lovely in general too. I enjoyed the past / present structure, and I appreciate how knowing all of that history helped to make their relationship more complex and realistic for the reader.

Sure, a lot of the tension in this one comes from the fact that these two just won’t talk about their feelings. This might annoy some readers or seem to stretch believability, but I didn’t mind, not when I was having such a good time on this journey and didn’t want it to end anytime soon.

Loved what this book has to say about different kinds of love, and home, and finding your person.

Oh, and Julia Whelan narrating the audio was perfection.

I’ll just be over here counting down the days to Henry’s 2022 release.
