Emily Henry and I didn't get off on the right foot. I started with Book Lovers and it just annoyed me. Intensely. However, this is now my third EH and the second one I've really enjoyed. I think she's forgiven.

Solid 4 out 5.

I loved the relationship dynamics and the fact they repressed their obvious feelings for each other for so long were friends first. I'm a sucker for an uptight MMC and the 'opposites attract' trope is always a winner for me.

The time jumps get on my nerves and are a delight in equal measure but I do mostly appreciate them. It is a credit to the writing that I spent over 300 pages with pretty much only 2 characters and neither of them grated on me.

I rolled my eyes a few times and wanted to shake them both and scream at them to JUST BLOODY TALK TO ONE ANOTHER. But if they did I wouldn't have enjoyed myself for as long so, you know... 💁‍♀️

summary:
Poppy is living out her lifelong dream as a travel writer. She has a fancy NYC apartment and regularly jetsets off to extravagant vacations. So why does her life feel so empty? Ten years ago, Poppy met Alex at college, and their relationship, though unlikely at the beginning, blossomed into a strong friendship, bolstered by their annual summer trip - until a fateful trip to Croatia two years ago. Since then, Alex and Poppy have barely spoken, and Poppy decides to wrangle Alex into one last summer trip in an attempt to fix their relationship and her life.

review:
It truly pains me to rate an Emily Henry book so low, but I just didn't like it. Poppy is just so CUTE and VIVACIOUS and it came across as too "manic pixie dream girl" for my liking. I liked Alex well enough but he wasn't that interesting. Their arguments feel contrived and this book showed me something I dislike in romance books more than miscommunication - no communication. The pacing felt off (too slow?) and the buildup to finding out what happened in Croatia was underwhelming. I also think I'm sort of over the "twentysomething experiences angst over careers and life goals" trope, though maybe that's because I'm living that out in my real life currently.

I'm used to Emily Henry's books having something special, whether it's excellent banter, a fun setting, or an unusual premise. Unfortunately, this book had none of the above. It gets a 3.5-star rating, and not lower, because Emily Henry's writing is always, at the very least, decent, and I didn't hate it enough to rate it lower.

loved this, thought the chemistry between poppy & alex was so sweet and was rooting for them to be together the whole time. i hardcore related to poppy's feelings about her hometown and getting out of it. i don't think emily henry's writing and banter will ever be a miss for me.

This book was a very leisurely enjoyable read. It felt very summery and light which is perfect for a June read. I enjoy Emily Henry’s writing style and I think this book ties for my favorite of hers. If you like friends to lovers I definitely recommend:)
