Absolutely mandatory book on colonial expansionism through a Native American lens, published during the American Indian Movement of the 60s and 70s.
It's a very emotionally difficult read, but very important.

“I can still see the butchered women and children lying heaped and scattered all along the crooked gulch as plain as when I saw them with eyes still young. And I can see that something else died there in the bloody mud, and was buried in the blizzard. A people’s dream died there. It was a beautiful dream . . . the nation’s hoop is broken and scattered.”

Throughout the book, I kept wondering why history refers to Native Americans by an English Americanized name rather than the name in their native tongue. This book was poignant and beautiful. Given that it is 30 years old it may also have been well ahead of its time in the treatment of the American Indian history. I would be interested to read the history from a Native American author as well.

I can't say I liked this book because of how painful it was to read, but I am glad that I read it. It tells an important part of American history, and I would encourage people to read it.... However, some parts are rather graphic, and I wouldn't suggest reading it all at once. I only read 1-2 chapters a week and that was manageable, but I doubt I would have gotten through it if I wasn't reading happier books along with it.
I give it 3 stars because, as it was a good book, it wasn't enjoyable to read.
