My only real criticism is that sometimes the messages were a little heavy handed. I think the author felt the need to make things very clear but in some bits it was a bit overdone and came off a little cringey. I think considering this is her first work though that’s totally understandable.

I personally found it a little too cliche with the romance aspects but I think so many people would love it for that and that’s personal taste.

Aside from that it was really great. I loved the focus on grief, I loved the magic system and learning how it all worked, I loved the way the characters were expanded on and delving deeper into their backstories.

Magical. Mysterious. Powerful. From the wonderful characters to the palpable experiences of grief Deonn captures - I’m hooked on this series!

It’s been a whole minute since book made me feel the way this book did. I felt like i was transported to the best years of my teenage life, where all i would do was immerse myself in the latest fantasy book — letting the writing take me into the next great adventure.

Modern fantasy has taken different shapes since it became popular again in the 2010’s — i feel like many authors tried and failed to make a compelling story. But Tracy Deonn has mastered and renewed this genre, setting a new standard for the future. The hype around this book is absolutely and entirely well founded (in fact, i think there should be way more hype).

This modern Arthur retelling, with a story about grief, love, friendship and magic, grabs you from page 1 and does not let you go until you find yourself in the end. Not once did this book feel out of pace, or did it make me question where the story was going. The world building was never overwhelming, and each and every single one of the characters was written perfectly.

Bree, Bree, Bree. Such a strong, powerful, beautiful, and lovely character. Never once did i feel like her decisions were out of pocket, nor did i ever disagree with her path. I felt as though i was standing beside her every step of the way, rooting for her and encouraging to see her journey through. I laughed when she laughed, cried and felt sadness when she did — i loved her, and i can’t wait wait to read more of her story.

Now, im usually not a fan of love triangles, and the story does seem like it setting up one. However! in this story, it’s definitely the first time i am actually rooting for both of the male-leads. Again, it’s very well written, Nick and Sel bring something unique to Bree’s character, and the author made sure we felt the romantic tension between both of them! Honestly, one of my favorite things about this book is that although we get amazing romance throughout the book — never once does it overshadow Bree’s journey (which is very common in these types of books).

I really wish i could write a letter to Tracy Deonn, thanking her for writing grief in such a beautiful way. When i lost my grandma — who practically raised me in my early years — i felt completely and utterly lost in a world without her. Tracy took me back to that feeling in the first chapter, but throughout the story, she also took the time to let me (and everyone who has experience the ‘loss’ of a loved one) have closure in the journey between Bree and her mom. I really am thankful for that.
