Tragic, but beautifully written.
What got to me most about this story was the inability of any of the family members to say what they really wanted to say.
Mom and Dad in the story each have their own separate issues. Mom wanted to be a doctor but due to marriage and child-rearing was unable to. Dad, a Chinese American, remembers never being fully accepted. Both Focus their complete attention on the middle child Lydia. Each send conflicting messages. Mom says "Stand Out. Stand out", while Dad says, "Fit in. Fit in."
The oldest son is virtually ignored while the youngest daughter is almost hidden.
The book is the study of love and loss and how a family tries to stay together after a tragedy occurs.
Highly recommended

I absolutely loved this book. It's not fast paced or filled with excitement but it's filled with characters who felt real - so very real - and we were allowed into their heads during some pretty hard times.
I didn't think I'd like this book nearly as much as I did but it really moved me. I'm sad to be done with it.
I recorded a video review on my website where I say pretty much the same thing.
