I went into this expecting a beach fluff summer read, and ended up getting slapped in the face with exactly the kind of story and reminders I needed at this point in my life.

Boy, do I love Taylor Jenkins Reid!! Every book I’ve read of hers has been so good!! I absolutely love how her stories live in the same universe and her style for story telling! I can’t wait for my next read from her!

I love Nina. I love Hud. I love Jay. I love Kit. I love June. One of my favorite books of the year! What a pleasure to listen to it with Julia Whelan narrating.

3/5 stars

It physically hurts me to give a TJR book less than 5 stars.

First of all, this line from the synopsis: "By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames." honestly makes this book sound much more exciting than it actually is.

And second of all, Mick Riva is the most garbage character I've read about in a long time. I'm sorry I know I shouldn't let my hate for him affect my rating, but seriously I just got so angry every time he appeared on page. The BEST part of this book was the end when Nina went off on his ass.

I think the main reason why this ended up being an overall average read for me was because of the characters. TJR is known for having these fascinating, enticing characters who feel like real people. So real you get deeply invested in them, you feel what they feel, and you need to Google search them just to double check you aren't actually reading a historical biography. The Riva siblings did not have that effect on me. They were likeable, they were okay, but not memorable.

I did find myself really enjoying parts of this, but I was ultimately disappointed at the end. I didn't cry or really understand what this book was trying to convey. Looking back on the story as a whole, I realized nothing really happened except for family drama, lies, and cheating. It left me feeling like what was the point?????
