There was a relationship in this book that was such a stunning example of love and partnership. The mystery was gripping and the end was tied up satisfactorily and poetically.

I really enjoyed this book! I wish I read it in the winter, it would have had all the vibes! It is like a mystery historical fiction with a badass female lead! Like Doctor Quinn Medicine Women but in the winter in New England! lol Ephraim Ballard is one of my new favorite book husbands/boyfriends! The way this man loved his wife is TRULY GOALS!I hope he was like that in real life. The book was written so well and it was great to read about how everything came together at the end! 5/5 Stars.

Clearly this will be an unpopular opinion, but I’m okay with that and owning it. This book was unbearable and clearly geared towards ultra feminists and liberals (which reading some of the negative views, even women in those categories found it horrible). It just drags on and on and is sooooo boring and unrealistic to be considered historical fiction. Just call it fiction. I only finished it for a book club and would’ve been very content never reading this book ever. The rape aspect wasn’t lightly mentioned. It was described in much detailed multiple times so I definitely recommend anyone who may be impacted by this topic, stay away from this. I will never read anything by this author again.

I actually literally don’t think I’ve cried this much in the last year. I am so unwell, this was one of the best books I ever read. 10/10. Martha Ballard, I love you. 

Possibly one of the best quotes from any book I’ve ever read was when

Martha cut North’s dick off and said “It is a pity you hate women so much because you are going to spend the rest of your life pissing like one”.

Books like this are what I love from historical fiction. An intricate, down to earth story that ties up fittingly. I never expected a story that involves so much straightforward court proceedings to maintain my interest! Yet it did. It is a coldly atmospheric novel, rich with both compassion and cruelty, and justice taken into own hands. This novel is perfect for midwinter reading, and the time it took me to finish only reflects that I picked it up right as winter was turning to spring, and was less interested in bleakness. Every time I did listen I was rapt, and the audio narrator did a wonderful job.

I did not realize it was heavily inspired by real events and people. Huge trigger warning for multiple depictions of rape, pregnancy and labor, and injury.
