I tend to avoid historical fiction and I don't like to read book summaries before diving into a book as to not spoil anything. I have seen this book mentioned before and added it to my Libby holds. I saw it was set in the 1700s and grumbled. I told myself, I'll give it a shot since I got a "skip the line" copy and wouldn't get the chance again for awhile. When I tell you Martha Ballard hooked me from the first chapter and I couldn't stop reading, that carries a lot of weight! Yes, it's set in the 1700s, yes, it is told in the first person view of a midwife, but the strength of her character!! I adore her! She is so well rounded and stands up for anyone that needs defended with a zero tolerance policy. We get to know her family and the people in the township. Be warned, there are a lot of people in this story, but it is SO well written. Highly recommend!!
