Gods of Jade and Shadow explores Mayan mythology with a modern twist as fantasy books of this genre often do, as in incorporating the characters into modern life while maintaining main distinguishing features of their personality and sometimes referring back to stories, events and places in said myth.

It was hard to grasp the pronunciations and (pre-spaniard colonial) names at first but the audiobook really helps, and watching the short videos on TEDed and See U History channels on youtube before reading this somewhat eased the understanding.

I am once again disappointed for I expected so much more from this book, it has been on and off my longterm TBR for so long. It had a rather weak plotline but I appreciate the lack of sm*t, although, if you're planning on reading this do look up the CONTENT WARNINGS as there are many...many. Classic Mayan thing

I really enjoyed the characters and myths, but romance was lacking like in most of SMG books.

Maybe my feelings will ebb, but for now this is five stars. Such a quick, easy to read story. Like a fairytale. I just got back from a trip to Mexico City and knew I wanted to read a book relating to Mayan / Mesoamerican culture. This yanks at your heart strings whilst remaining a tale of hope and vivacity.

I was pretty disappointed with this book. The plot had so much potential and I felt it was unique. However the author just told me everything instead of showing me anything. I only began to truly know the characters at the end of the book and even then I felt like I was missing something. I only kept reading to see how things ended up. I feel like I just read an outline of what could be a great book.

loved cas, the descriptions and world building and myth making was beautifully done. i just was not hooked on the plot and that kept me from getting super into it. very much felt like a legend or fairytale in that sense, so a lot in metaphor and hidden meanings which is awesome but yeah didnt hook me
