I struggled with this book and feel it teetered between 2 and 3 stars. There were some good moments but I found the whole thing a little hard to follow at times and frustrating at others. I am a fan of Bennett's Divine Cities so I am glad I read that series first because if I had read this first I might not have given those a shot.

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

Too long for a horror novel
slow-paced

Some excellent moments here and there, but I definitely think it could’ve been A LOT shorter and it tended to drag at points.

The Cthulhu Mythos fused with a CBS family drama

You SHOULD read this book IF: You think cosmic horror should be less tense and more heroic.

You SHOULD NOT read this book IF: You think my previous comment is antithetical to the mentioned genre.

I really loved this book. The setting of the Wink, New Mexico as a small town stuck in the 1950s aesthetic with unimaginable monsters trapped there was a super fun set up. I loved the cosmic horror of it all and the overall strangeness. I think it was really original and fun to read.

There a few flaws that kept this from being a perfect 5 star read for me. The main character, Mona, felt a little underdeveloped and hollow. Also, the book is heavily driven by exposition, which is not necessarily bad to read, but I think it can get a little slow at times.
