As always, a beautiful wonderful story from Alice Oseman. I love her universe. and I really enjoyed identifying the other characters from the oseman-verse. Michael's cameo as "the winter olympian" becky as the girl with purple hair at the bar, nick and charlie at the beginning, and maybe tori there at the end? I wonder how much of her stories are autobiographical, like did she feel the pressure to go to university when she really wanted to go to art college? because that comes up with tara in heartstopper as well. anyway, I really related to frances in feeling that my personality was just school. it's nice to feel so seen in oseman's books. she really gets the queer teen experience, and that's very special. I also feel so much for Caris and Aled, with their horrible mom. Because I can relate heavily, and it's nice to see that reflected in a book i enjoy so much. also especially when caris talks about not owing anything to your family just because your related by blood. I appreciate that she was able to think through that with Aled and be there for him and see him as separate from their mom. I dont know if i can do that with my siblings, or else i feel like ive already tried. Even so, i admired her self-assurance in every choice. I really noticed this time around how poorly frances speaks of herself, how she thinks she's awful and annoying and stupid and it made me sad. It reminded me of me. perhaps I was more able to notice it this time than last time because ive really noticed a difference in how i speak about myself to myself. i hope frances can stop talking that way about herself, shes a really great friend and artist and daughterm and i hope she can see that soon.

something so solidly real about oseman's characters, something so comforting in their accompanying worlds. even when oseman's characters are struggling there is this strong soothing quality to the narrative, this almost surreptiously hopeful lilt to the internal minds & perceptions of these characters.... really lovely reread & i'm glad i had these novels in high school :)
