Radio Silence

4.2 AVERAGE

Finished it in pretty much one sitting (and a lunch break). Phenomenal. Really real, and just a genuine feeling story that wasn’t overwhelming to begin or digest. I really enjoyed it, and would recommend it.

This got me far more in my feelings than I was expecting. Teared up at a few parts, not gonna lie.

[5 stars]

Alice Oseman is THE author of the authentic teenager experience. Aled and Frances are the most relatable characters I have ever read. I don't know how they do it, but Oseman's characters always make me feel so seen.

I think this book perfectly captures those of us who were (and still are) obnoxiously into fandom culture, who feel the pressure of academic expectations, and who have had to figure out their sexuality. It balances the struggle between passions and expectations, deals with friendship, mistakes, and trust. It hits on all these difficult coming-of-age emotions with grace, while still allowing for humor and a hopeful message. This is the blueprint for found family.

(For those of you wondering: the POV character is bisexual, and the other MC is demisexual, and implied to be questioning his gender identity)

Radio Silence is probably my favorite book of her's so far... even just a bit above Heartstopper (it's hard to believe, I know... actually maybe they're equal... I like them for different reasons). She's definelty made my insta-buy list, I will always want to read what they put out.

Happy Reading!

Um... This was fine?

I picked this up because I heard there was Ace/Demi rep and as someone who identifies as such, that was exciting to me! It's not really talked about much (there are slight hints here and there) but it's brought up once... Like, for two lines, so it wasn't exactly the BIG REP I was hoping for (despite what I had been told about the book).

But having something is also nice...

Aside from that, the book was fine. Frances was okay as a main character. The writing seemed very juvenile (like, a teenager wrote it -- which Osemen was only 17 I believe when she penned this book) but it was off-putting at times. The short chapters made the book move along very quickly which was both a good and bad thing but it seemed like we didn't get time to dwell on stuff for too long and just moved onto the next thing.

It did mean I finished the book in one day though, which was nice for me.

In a way it was very reminiscent of teenage life in that way, how everything feels chaotic and fast and you don't have a lot of breathing room sometimes. Especially when it comes to friends / friendship dramas. The insta-friendships or like, how easily Frances befriends people who she previously didn't like, was a bit bothersome too. It felt too 'sunshine and rainbows', like she wasn't allowed to just dislike or be disliked by someone.

Aled is a character / name I recognise from Heartstopper so it was nice to have more insight into his life in this book. I really dislike his mother (it was frustrating to read those parts) but I think it'd be weird for anyone to be on Carol's side. I do think it's a bit weird how he handled things with Frances but I can understand hiding away and wanting to be left alone so I don't fully blame him for his actions.

As frustrating as some parts were to read, I could see how realistic they are to a teenage experience. At times, I was very frustrated with Frances' mum and wished she would be more of a mum figure. It felt like she was just trying to be her daughter's mate and didn't even try to help with Aled? Weird. Again, that felt like it was leaning into the whole 'sunshine and rainbows' aspect of the writing.

Maybe being so removed from the age of the characters (despite having the same doubts myself at their age about the same things), I felt the 'big conflict' about university was a bit flat. The whole fandom aspect of the book was fine, it was just a bit weirdly coincidental that the Creator and a Big Fan Artist lived across the road from each other and were in vaguely the same social circles / knew of each other. I'm just glad there wasn't a big emphasis on romance (even if there were some weird dub-con moments).

All that being said, I'm not like, bowled over or in love with this book or the author's writing style. I think I've only ever read one volume of Heartstopper too so I think it's safe to say that, despite the 'rep' she gives us, Osemen isn't for me. I debated between a 2 and 3 star rating for this and I think I'm gonna lean more towards a 2. Maybe a 2.5 at most.

3.75⭐️

This arrived last night and since then I haven’t slept, reading it. It’s just one of those books you can read in 24 hours because it feels cozy to be in there. The characters are all so relatable and sound and act like real teenagers. As the others have said, the best part is the beautiful friendship that blossoms between the main characters and how this affects their identity, and the reality of teenagers in the age of the internet and fandoms. Honorable mentions: lots of poc main characters, as well as bisexual and asexual ones. Yeah! Finally!

I think it would have had a greater impact on me if I was a grade obsessed student like Frances – which i’m defenitely not – but I know there are people who needed this book.

This book is for the fangirls and fanboys, for those of us facing identity crisis, or just any teenager who feels a bit lost. I’m glad I picked it up.

It is a mysterious story. There are also some problems between the main characters.

I fucking envy the relationship between Aled and Frances. And love the relationship of Frances and her mother.
Ich mag alles an dem Buch. Auch wenn es eigentlich die ganze Zeit bergab geht steht man am Ende nicht hoffnungslos da and i really liked that.

Alle Probleme wurden so schon relatable dargestellt.
All in all einfach sehr erfrischend ein young Adult Buch zu lesen, in dem nicht alles wie kompletter Bullshit erscheint.

(Habe actually am Ende bissle geweint. War alles too close to home..)
