I thought that this was a really interesting book about one women’s journey into the wilderness, to kind of save herself.

The hiking portion of the book was super inspiring! She was wicked badass even if some of the mistakes she made were anxiety inducing. Also great to see how mostly the hiking community treated her.

For the non-hiking parts of the book, I was always surprised at what she was thinking and doing. While I did not agree with the choices that she made, she was in pain and was looking to do what she needed to do at the time. Interesting to get to see how other people wildly different than you think.

This book is beloved for a reason. I definitely cried at the end, despite it being my second time reading it.

I watched the film with Reece Witherspoon years ago and have been wanting to read the book ever since. This is an incredible and inspiring story of Cheryl who set out to walk the PCT all by herself with hardly any hiking experience. As it was a memoir it was described in such detail that at parts it felt like you were walking along with Cheryl. At some points like the boot incident and the horrendous snow storms it felt almost too far fetched to be real life and not a movie but it was all true. Cheryl was so honest with her past and was open about her drug addiction and her difficult marriage. The rawness of how she spoke about grief and the impact losing her mother had on her and the rest of her family. It was a really powerful book and really showcased the strength of someone going through such pain can have and the bravery to try something new and keep going even when it seems like the hardest thing at all. This was not just the journey of the PCT but a reflection of life itself and how the kindness of strangers helped her along her way who soon became friends.

It says in my ‘read’ history that I’ve read this book three times now (including this last one, in 2023). To be honest, I remember reading it twice (don’t know what happened there - a glitch in the matrix? My memory is not the greatest in the last few years). That said, I don’t know how I could forget it, because I love this book so much, it seems impossible to me I’d forget the experience of reading it. Anyways, every time I read it I get emotional, immersed, inspired by Cheryl and her experience(s) and I just want to put a backpack on and go (and I’d have the same problem with packing, I bet 😅). I haven’t yet - not to that extent (3 months in the wilderness), though I’ve traveled both solo and accompanied, sometimes with a backpack, other times with a carry on, and I always learn something about myself/the place/someone else/… I’ve watched the movie, too, but I don’t like how it takes some of the decisions she made (in the book and her life) away from her and distorted them as suggestions and decisions made for her (I’ve only noticed it this time around). It’s very probable I’ll read it again in the future, to inspire myself to make changes and be bold and adventurous. ‘Till next time. ✨
