It's very telling that the book itself acknowledges that Peter's hair is too long and his face is hilariously round when he's in the Spider-Man costume and that they amend both, because it was the first thing I noticed when Lafuente came on. That being said, while you do get some odd character design choices and weird faces, I do like the art style under the right amount of polish. It's not Bagley, but then what is?

Old art style was back just long enough for me to get whiplash when it left again. I love Bendis, but someone needs to teach him how to write women.

Bendis follows up 'The World According to Peter Parker',the volume that gave new direction to Ultimate Spider-man (actually there's no new direction, the series eventually rightfully returns to the original numbering) with Aunt May continuing to shelter Bobby Drake and Johnny Storm as well as Gwen Stacy. It's almost a bad sitcom, but Scott Baio's nowhere in sight!

This volume is named after the Chameleons, but they don't make an immediate appearance. First there's trouble with a neighborhood boy whose come into some strange powers (a leftover thread from 'Ultimate Fantastic Four/Ultimate Extinction') and some troubling legislation that threatens Kitty Pryde's place in school.

LaFluente's art, which I did not like, was absent for a few issues here, but eventually comes back. I'm getting used to the pseduo-shonen-jump aesthetic though and thankfully he's eased up a bit on some characters (for example, Gwen Stacy no longer looks like a blow-up china doll).

Anyway, this was a good addition. Nothing mind-blowing, but Bendis' presence makes Ultimate Spider-man the most consistently pleasing title I've ever read.

Not too bad I guess. Lots going on here, not the traditional spider-man I have known before, but one that hangs out with other superheroes and can't defend himself from being hit and kidnapped and tied up... Haven't read any back story to this either so would probably like it more if I had read things in order.

This volume of Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man sees Gwen Stacy (not dead in this universe), Human Torch, Iceman, and Peter Parker living under the same roof with Aunt May. The high school feel continues and we meet a couple new villains.

This book was what we've come to expect from Bendis writing-wise. Likable characters written with that one of a kind Bendis humor.

While David LaFuente has a style all his own, I still can't get myself completely on board with it. He's a great artist, but has taken this book in a more juvenile and manga-esque turn than prior incarnations.

Still great fun, though, and well good enough to keep me reading.

Volume two brings us back to the devastating moral quandaries of the previous series. Kitty is forced to run from the anti-mutant posturing of the government and a villian impersonates peter and wrecks his relationship with everyone important to him.

The Parker home has become a halfway house for teenage superheroes as Johnny Storm and Iceman move in. On the other hand, my beloved Kitty Pride has snapped and gone rogue. Overall, good, but I'm not yet as invested as I was in the original series. We'll see.
