This alternate history is based off of the, "states' rights," argument for the Civil War, which is a cornerstone of modern southern racist Confederate pride. Wish I hadn't wasted my time.

I think I liked this book even better than Boneshaker. Cherie Priest seems to have fully gained her footing in this world. Mercy is a great heroine - not at all meek and retiring, not a shrinking violet of a southern lady. My only complaint is that there were so many characters coming and going that I occasionally lost track of them.

Amazingly well-paced. Wish I read Boneshaker first.

The Clockwork Century gets even better with Dreadnought. Mercy Lynch is a strong young woman at the start of the novel, who finds new strengths through the course of the book. The pace of action is breathtaking and yet it feels like every bit of adventure builds the characters. Without spoilers, I'll just say that the end had me all teary.

I can't wait for the next book.

Even better than Boneshaker, which I didn't think was possible! This is a rollicking adventure story, with Civil War sensibilities, giant steam engines, and zombies. What more can a person ask for?

This one didn't quite captivate me like the first, in part, I think, because I already knew what the danger was, whereas the characters had to discover it for themselves. Not going to stop me from listening to the sequel, though.
