I’ve read all his others and loved them. I could not get into this one. I even restarted from the beginning after I was about 1/4 of the way in.
Not bad. It's shorter than his others, but I did enjoy the character of Cari Mora. I'm drawn to strong female survivors and I hope we get subsequent books with her in them. I do think the villian in the story, Hans-Peter rivaled Hannibal Lector in the sick and sadistic categories. The plot was a little thin as it's about retrieving a vault full of gold buried beneath a home on Florida's Gold Coast and I was hoping to read more about Detective Robles, but his story seemed to fade away within the other plot.

A sympathetic bad ass (ex-child soldier) heroine and a collection of bad guys who are difficult to keep track of.
A train wreck of a book. Simultaneously simple yet confusing from page to page. Many characters come in and out without any real understanding of who/why they are.
The main character is uninteresting and the bad guy is over the top, even for Harris.
Wow is this bad.

You know, when you are reading a suspenseful book, and you're a third through it, it's bedtime, and you can't get it out of your head? So you get up and finish it? That's me, with this book, last night. I finished it at 2:30AM. Maybe part of it was me, I was in a reading mood, but certainly Thomas Harris is great at writing suspenseful books. I remember reading Silence of the Lambs this way too. The story is engaging, the setting is interesting, I cared about the characters. Another success for Thomas Harris. (Stephen King wrote about this, maybe it was in Misery, I remember reading it and cursing him for making me so unable to stop...)
I really wanted to like this book. I will be honest, if I hadn't read him before and hadn't thought I had an idea of where he was going, it wouldn't have gotten such a high rating.
Anyone who is a fan of his previous work, be prepared for less character development than normal. It had a bunch of minor storylines, but they honestly either didn't go anywhere or were cleaned up so nicely you wonder why they were there.
You think you know what the book is going to be about, and you are both right and wrong. It was pretty hard to get through and I found myself having to reread pages because I spaced.
As for what I think he was going for, he was very much trying to comment on our current US government situation. However, he did this in a way where he also made all the immigrants criminals? Even though it was obvious he was against the situation? It was very confusing, but you can tell he did his research.
