I’m a really big fan of all James Acaster’s work but this book was just not what I expected at all. It was a story full of randomness without being particularly funny.

First off, I listened to this via audiobook and that's always a good choice with James Acaster's books.

Like many people have mentioned, this is more of a written comedy routine about a fictional James (much like his Netflix specials) rather than an autobiographical, humorous take on leaving social media. I think I might have preferred the latter, but it was still interesting.

As I'm currently taking a break from popular social sites (except for goodreads obviously) I was excited to give this audiobook a go. James Acaster entertains, as always. With laugh out loud moments, he describes his journey both to and from social media in fictionalized tales so over the top it can only be described as absurdism. His adventures offline have characters mirroring the odd behaviors that we do online without a second thought (stalking exes, stalking crushes, joining social mobs to gang up on people or "cancel" them, then turning on our own gangs only to be cast out as an outsider ourselves). In a work of genius, he shows us just how utterly bizarre these behaviors are outside of the internet, bringing a good case forth as to why we shouldn't be on social media in the first place - it makes us believe that those behaviors are normal.
