I got big shutter island vibes. It was really hard to trust what the main character was saying.

it’s obviously really beautifully written. i love the fig tree metaphor and the discussions around societal expectations and constraints for women. however, the only thing i can think about after finishing it is all the racist passages in this book and how practically everyone looks the other way when reviewing this book and talking about how much of a progressive and feminist icon sylvia plath is. maybe MAYBE it was intentional to make us despise the character and reflect on this topic, but i truly don’t think that was the sylvia’s goal, so im just really disappointed.

This has always been on my list. It was interesting to draw connections between the main character and Plath's own life. The bell jar theme was spot on and the way Plath writes makes you question what is truthful in the narration of a person in an asylum.
