To get what you want, you have to know exactly how much you are willing to give up.

As serialized books go, there's something called "second-book syndrome", wherein a writer fails to write a second book that will live up to the first one. Well, this book doesn't suffer from this syndrome. It was better than the first, even. This book is the one that shows that the arguments used for criticizing in a negative way the first fell apart (I addressed these arguments in my review of Captive Prince). The relationship between the main characters starts to be a more equal one and the plot continues to be interesting as the first one, with a well-structured structure and plot twists that fall into place at the right moment.

This is truly one of my favorite series! I completely recommend it!

I already adored the first book and then I read that the second one was supposed to be even better. I was surprised, because the second book of a trilogy isn’t known to the good one, but here I can confidently say it’s better than the first. I loved this book! I absolutely loved it! Perfect balance of a lot of glorious character moments and driving the plot forward. It all works brilliantly.
It had been a long time since I couldn’t put a book down but this one did it!

I JUST....SO MANY EMOTIONS. The characters are so complicated and well-rounded, and each move is carefully planned out. This series is definitely not for everyone, but if you like it then you LOVE IT. I am so freaking invested in these characters, and I cannot WAIT to see what happens next!

“He needs me,” said Damen. “I don’t care if you tell the world.”

Reread: September 2021

The building relationship...the clever politics...the minute details...Laurent’s control...it is all just so good. The ending gets me every. damn. time. Just an incredible trilogy, with an incredible sequel.
