What if proving sentience to the other inhabitants of the universe was just like Eurovision?
This is the first goofy scifi I've read that actually comes close to living up to Adams' Hitchhikers without overdoing it the whole way through. Parts are wryly cutting, lambasting those who deserve it, like officious governmental cogs too full of themselves to know how little they really matter. Other parts may seem derivative. I felt they were homage, however.
Valente serves up a zany, light-hearted jaunt.

The list of content warnings belies how joyful and funny this is. The emotions are real but it is not bleak.blymanor's review

I have read a different Valente book which I loved so I said why not see what else she had written.
Reading the blurbs, all I got was Eurovision playing in my head because that I know and love but you this book was a great surprise and I loved it.
The comedic timing was feeling on point with where the author was taking it and while I haven't read 'Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' just a quote here and there but I can see why the blurbs mentions it.
The story starts out heavy in the comedy but then Valente comes in with the world building, the backstory of the characters are eventually revealed and the characterizations come to a good full circle.
Heath Miller was so instrumental for how much I ended up loving and enjoying this audiobook. He gave each character a particular sound that elevated them and made me fall for them and care what happens as the book went along.
Moderate: Death and Car accident
