This story kept me captivated with each successive chapter. Her story is nothing short of amazing. Perhaps it is because my own two children were very close in age to this author and that we visited China as tourists at almost the same time as she was in China on the run for her life.
Her story is shocking, sad, inspirational, and enlightening. I'd heard generic stories of what life in North Korea is like, but it makes it all seem so much more real when coming from one person who's lived it. If you're needing a little more perspective in your life, then read this book. It's time very well spent.

I find that this is hard to review because while it is an important story, I just did not like the writing at all. There was a lot of repetitive phrases, the writing wasn't compelling, and Eunsun Kim doesn't really give us much of her personality. There wasn't anything more to the story beyond detailing her account, which is fine, but it isn't usually what I look forward to when reading memoirs. I commend her for her dedication towards helping others and raising awareness, but I feel like this could've been a much stronger story if it was written better or if there was something more.

Leaving the star rating blank because it feels weird to rate memoirs. The story is what it is.

Personally, I got what I came for when reading this book. I wanted to understand more details on what it is like to escape from North Korea, what kinds of challenges would be faced in that journey, what the solutions to those problems might be, and just generally get an idea of how all of that comes together from the perspective of someone who went through it. This book delivered on all of that well.

It was written very factually and informatively, not necessarily poetically, but that's okay. It was honest and important.
