Classic Kleypas! Romance, sex, an independent heroine who writes popular novels, a brilliant hero with a dark back story, the rules of society try to ruin everything, but love conquers all. Sigh.

Jack Devlin is my favorite Kleypas hero (apologies to St. Vincent and Derek Craven).

The love story made me swoon, and the spice level gets kicked up to 11.

Is this book dated? Yes. Problematic? Certainly. Worth a read if you're exploring the Kleypas backlog? Definitely.

Amanda really toes the line of being insufferable, but it worked really well in terms of drawing her overall character; even when I was rolling my eyes at her, I was rooting for her. Devlin was a fun, domineering self-made hero, and there's plenty of soap opera-esque angst and drama, especially towards the end.

Definitely feels of its time, but that actually made it kind of refreshing.  The audiobook narration was fine.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Suddenly you notes

  • 3.75/5✨
  • I’m not a huge fan of the “bit like other girls” narrative that jack assigns to the two women in the story he gets along with but lord am I a fan of longing
  • Seeing myself in Amanda probably isn’t the healthiest when I’m only 23 but it does give me something to daydream about lol
  • The agony of wanting to read more battling the violent shame I would feel reading this on the T is great
  • I’m starting to learn that there is such a thing as too much smut. The longing isn’t as good when they can physically be together so I’m really waiting for the conflict to come (and I know she’s coming soon)
  • While I love a good unexpected pregnancy (controversial, I know) I HATE “betrothed to another”
  • Jack Fr pissed me off with his “love confession” like wtf was that
  • Honestly got worse after they got together in the end lmfao
  • Bruh. How did one plot point almost completely ruin the book for me. Fr stop reading when she becomes editor of the magazine and you’ll be happier.
