4.5 Stars...I really, really liked this second book in the Beggar’s Choice series and can’t figure out why I waited so long after reading book one to pick this one up. I won’t be making this mistake with book three!

The emotion in this book is so visceral...I think I broke down in tears at least three different times. Any book that has you with a crying/almost crying sore throat and headache when you”feel finished is a fantastically well-written one.

The two main characters are well developed plus we get more character development of the secondary characters from the first book. These characters evoke strong feelings as well, whether it’s the warmth of Charlie and Mabe, the humor of Bram and Viv, or the all out disgust “I want to throat punch you” feelings inspired by Leah, Vanessa, Bill or Nell’s mom. That’s an author who has done her job well.

The story arc moves a bit slow at times and there are a few plot holes that don’t work for me. These come at the hands of Sid and the cruel way he treats Nell despite professing his love for her. The first one is understandable from the plot perspective (though frankly I hate that old trope) but the second one serves no purpose and the third one is just plain awful, made even worse by the ultimate way Nell caves eventually. It really serves to undermine what the author tried to build in Nell’s character and just makes her look like a spineless wimp. It also seems to go against what the author tried to get us to believe about Sid as well. It really disappointed me, making me feel like the author just wanted a quick wrap up, in which case she should not have written that beach scene.

However that one lapse isn’t enough to turn me off this author or this series. I’m moving on to book three right now and I strongly recommend you give this books a try. You’ll love them.
