Sometimes YA is amazing, but sometimes the angsty teens are just too angsty, and one cannot take it any more

Strong debut novel in an interesting world with a very cool magic system. I appreciated how Elara and Faron communicated with each other, even if I was occasionally frustrated by the fact that the conversations I was most interested in seemed to be taking place off the page. The writing is descriptive and lovely. The pacing was slightly off for me; the first half was a little slow, but the last 80 pages or so are action packed. I will definitely be picking up the second book, I am really looking forward to seeing how the events of the last few chapters play out.

One of my new fave YAs. This book took place after The War™ happened and deals with the aftermath. So theres a lot of political intrigue and the effects that war has on The Child Chosen One™. But it was still pretty fast paced and so interesting. Never a dull moment. The bond between the two sister mc’s was peak. Captured perfect older sis mindset. Loved the dragons and the various queer rep. And the romances?! Like absolutelt perfect?! Just this right amount of slow burn, lovely little enemies to lovers, and no spice. I am a supporter of keeping spice out of YA. Save that for adult books pls. (No shame if that’s what you like reading but just a reminder that middle schoolers read YA and I started reading YA in elementary school. Just keeping age groups in mind…)
Anyways this was a masterful debut
