A surprisingly delightful read!
I got this book on the cheap from Amazon and I generally don't expect much from free books, but this one was excellent!
The characters were solid, the plot entertaining and interesting without being too twee or convoluted. Excellent narrative passages developing great imagery. Just a pleasure.

Not my normal read but I love all things Chinese and having had the opportunity to wander the modern day streets of Malacca figured why not. An easy, fun escape from reality for a time. Not overly heavy on the romance which I appreciated. Overall really enjoyed my time in the realm of spirits with Li Lan.

Absolutely amazing. Stunning prose and a page-turning story of both historical and magical wonder. I can not recommended this book more highly. It is one of the top books I've read this year.
While this book contained a lot of interesting information about Malaysian culture at the time, the issues with pacing, overt foreshadowing, tell-and-not-show storytelling, and total lack of character development killed this book for me. I couldn't stand Li Lan and her utter self-absorption and was extremely bored throughout a story that could have (and should have) been very captivating based on it's premise. It turned into a very tedious and also immature supernatural romance by the end when I was expecting a fairy tale from a culturally diverse perspective.
