Fantastic. Just a lovely novel all around, filled with traditional Chinese mythos and beautiful writing.
Intriguing premise & I dug it when I started. But after stalling 1/2 way for months, I'm admitting defeat.

Senang rasanya melihat karakter utama perempuan yang dibesarkan dalam tradisi melayu-china, dengan 1001 aturan dan petuah tentang menjadi anak berbakti, selalu milih dirinya sendiri dalam segala situasi.
Li Lan bisa aja nerima tawaran untuk jadi pengantin arwah, karena it was the easy thing to choose.

I wanted to like this one. I really did. I gave it a pity star for the interesting cultural references at least.
For the ladies that liked it in book club, learning about the Chinese after-death belief systems was what they enjoyed about it. For me, it was interesting but it didn’t make up for the terrible writing and storytelling employed by the author.
I would have put it down about halfway through but it was a book club book so I finished it for posterity. I really had to muscle through the last 100 pages.
It’s her first book; I suppose the pity star could be for that too.

I liked this! Surprisingly. It got a little complicated and weird at times, but I think the mix of history and fantasy was refreshing and quite interesting. It mirrored what I knew about Chinese culture and I was hooked the whole way through this story.
