My only issue is that the other mice judge poor Frederick for being so lazy. If you make a parallel between the story and real life, does everyone think artists are lazy? Maybe I'm over-thinking it.

This story was fantastic. Lionni’s illustrations are always so captivating. Also, I liked the activities after the story.

I read this based on the book "The Girl With the Brown Crayon" or "You Can't Say You Can't Play" both by the same author. She talked about how she hated one Lionni book so much she didn't use any of them in her teaching. However, something caused her to give one of the books another read and she fell in love with the diversity of communities and friends in his books and the opportunities the books gave to discuss different kinds of friends and different rules and expectations for different communities. That said, the friends and community of Frederick are hands down societal goals. I just love Frederick and now my children do too. I would pair this with Abel's Island by William Steig (the author of Shrek and Doctor DeSoto) for artist representation and growth in your family and classrooms. Even as an adult, I'll put the video of this book on from prime video and find the reading so soothing. A must read classic.
