Beautiful jewel of a book. The poetry written in prose. I loved every page of it. It made me cry, made me laugh and made me reflect.

5th&6th grade book club February book.
I cannot wait to talk to my students about this book. It was so beautifully, poetically written. It tells such an important and relevant story that so many people in the US can relate to and so many more need to understand. Jude made me feel hopeful and proud. *BONUS* it is set in Cincinnati (Clifton, specifically!!)! My heart is full.

Wonderful book about a girl finding her place in a new country- trying to fit in but not lose who she is and where she came from

Feelings of belonging, home, connections - this was short but beautiful <3 parts of it would make my throat tighten up because being an immigrant is in no way easy, especially when you may not like those in power. Overall, so hopeful and loving, especially the proverbs!
One of my favorite Arabic proverbs was definitely:
“She makes you feel
Like a loaf of freshly baked bread.”
Because when that was followed by:
“It is said about the nicest, kindest people. The type of people who help you rise.”
I nearly cried

I picked this book up on a whim as I was looking through scribd for a new audiobook for my travel to and from uni. This book was in my recommended and as it was so short I thought I would give it a go. This was a total surprise in the best ways. Although it is a middle-grade story I think this book transcends age barriers and would be a great read for so many people. The narrator of the audiobook did an amazing job of getting the story across and added to my overall enjoyment of the book. I think that this book focuses on some really important diverse points of view that are really important to read from and highlights some really important themes that are both good to get children learning and interacting with but are also important for adults to hear. This was a really heartwarming book that focuses on some important heavier topics. Definitely recommend picking up this super quick read when you have a chance.

A great illustration to help understand someone’s perspective coming to America.
