Absolute beauty. Jude’s story as an Arab refugee living with an uncle, aunt, and cousin that she’s meeting for the first time in Cincinnati is eye opening in all the ways it should be. Such an amazing story to build empathy and understanding surrounding Arab refugees and Arab Americans.

This book spoke straight to my heart and is one I recommend to anyone 12 and up.

Read to my class of 6th graders! Review is based on their thoughts and enjoyment level.

"I'm learning how to be sad and happy at the same time."

Plot Summary: This book is about a middle-school girl Jude who immigrates to the United States from Syria with her mom. It's a fiction story but, talks a lot about life in Syria becoming volatile. It has family elements, friendship and brief romance as well as the talk of immigration and hate because of race.

My Opinion: I really enjoyed this book, I would rate it 4.5 stars. I felt like the brief romance which didn't become anything more than flirty was a little cringey at points. I loved the writing style which was poetry and lyrical. I also loved the friendship and family elements. This book was so realistic with the large amount of people who immigrate to the United States to get refuge from war. I hope that this book will have a sequel which is more mature of the characters in high school possibly.

Do I recommend it? Yes!! It was such an interesting 5 star read. It's from a point of view I haven't read before which is an English Speaker Learner who immigrated from Syria.

I quite enjoyed this short book. I know very little of middle eastern culture, but I'm always open to learning new things. I would recommend reading the author's note, something I dont usually do. It was nice to find out that the author's childhood was not quite what the main character's was. The writing was great and I'm impressed with how much seriousness the author managed to talk about while still keeping the story upbeat and relatable.

My 11 year old is reading this for one of his novel study books and it is beautifully written. It tells the story of a girl who moves from Syria go Cincinnati and her experiences of moving to the states, her worries about her family back home, and her Muslim identity. It felt very real and poignant.
