"I wonder if it is exhausting to be a tree. To lose something, year after year, only to trust that it will someday grow back."

I love the story and the format of this book. It's beautiful and warm. This book is the type of book that you'd need to read whenever you miss home or in reading slump. Jude adventure to move to America from Syria without her brother and her Baba.

This book will leave a warm and soothing feeling in your heart.

While this is a really emotional story, I feel like it being in verse took away from the emotions and it never felt as well developed plot and character wise as it could’ve been had it been a prose novel with more words to develop both those aspects.

Orang selalu bilang orang barat orang yg rasional krn atheis. Tapi mereka aslinya kebalikannya. Saking hidup dalam bubble-nya sendiri, mereka nyusahin para imigran dengan penilaiannya. Pake jilbab dikata gak bebas. Kenapa harus mikir perempuan yg bebas itu yg gak berjilbab? Easily labelling muslims as terrorist tiap ada terror.

"Americans love labels.
They help them know what to expect.
Sometimes, though,
I think labels stop them from
thinking."

Ini yg buat gue muak tiap orang² asia mengagung²kan orang sana. Krn mereka bahkan lebih primitif dibanding kita

What I liked: SO MUCH. The beautiful lyrical prose, the voice feeling very authentic and accurate to a girl of that age, showing, not telling, both the immigrant experience and the diaspora experience. Very relatable as a first gen immigrant.

What I disliked: honestly nothing! Wish it was longer/we got a happy ending for her dad and her brother though, but that’s a minor thing and only because I was so invested in their family.

So beautiful!

This is a story that has representation that should be more common in YA. The story of leaving your home and having to adjust to a new place isn’t uncommon, but this sheds light on an experience many immigrants face, and shows the discrimination that one has to go through during this process. I think this should be available in every classroom.

Withholding my review while HarperCollins employees are on strike for fair wages.

"... we are okay with trying to figure it out. we are okay with still learning our lines
because we are liking the script—
maybe, just maybe, we have both finally found roles that make sense to us."

this is so heartwarming. we must have generosity and courage like Jude.
