A wonderfully hopeful and honest juvenile fiction. Opens the heart to greater empathy for our immigrant population.
In gorgeous, lyrical prose and with a paucity of words, Jasmine Warga manages to convey the wide range of emotions that Jude, a young girl from war torn Syria, who leaves her father, brother, friends and all that is familiar to emigrate to America with her mother. Such a beautiful work. I commend this book to everyone who is interested in immigrant fiction.
“Americans love labels.
They help them know what to expect.
Sometimes, though,
I think labels stop them from
thinking.”
Hurray for another beautiful book written in prose.

I need to be less homesick to write about how I felt reading this. So maybe later.
Another great novel-in-verse, this was a very quick, but lovely read. There is plenty to discuss and think about, but without feeling overly issue-laden. I loved the Arabic proverbs sprinkled throughout. l
