Very good storytelling. Sometimes stories about current affairs or social issues can be preachy or cast the MC as the champion of the world. This was a great story about a normal girl.

This book was recommended to me by a group of students. I can’t wait to thank them tomorrow. Such an amazing and important story!

A good coming of age and immigrant story. Syria to US. The main character is likable. There are parts of her story that just about any young person can relate to.

Rather light hand, very surface, happy ending, emotions are washed over
Family, Muslim, immigrant, friendship, free verse

I enjoyed this book. It handled being a Muslim girl leaving Syria in an accessible way for kids. It teaches empathy without being didactic. But Jude also deals with the kinds of things a 12-year-old kid in America would relate to as well. It raises questions about what makes a family, what it means to be American, what is home, and so on.

A beautiful book written in verse. I started reading when I woke up and had it finished before dinner time. We learn what it’s truly like to have more than one home. My favorite Arabic proverb in the book sums up the theme perfectly: “She makes you feel like a loaf of freshly baked bread.” In Jude’s words, “It is said about the nicest kindest people. The type of people who help you rise.”

Such a beautiful, quick read. I really enjoyed Jude’s story and the decision to tell it in verse made it flow so well. One of my favorite books of the year.
