The story of a young refugee newly arrived in America from Syria told in the first person and in verse

Read this book in a day. It’s great. Told in blank verse but really clearly tells the story of a girl and her journey from Syria to America and how she struggles to fit in. It’s really easy to read - certainly don’t put off reading it because of the writing style. It actually makes it a quick read but still includes all the detail and emotion of a fantastic story.

This was a great book on the story of a Muslim girl who moves from Syria to America. Jude’s journey about finding her self identity is very sweet and heartwarming. The harsh realities she faces about racism/xenophobia are truly heartbreaking to read. I loved the different aspects of all of her struggles, including the struggle between embracing America and wanting to keep her homeland culture alive at the same time. I highly recommend this book. Brilliantly written and full of Muslim representation that we really need more of.

Beautiful and lyrical, and while it was written for a younger audience there was so much to love even for older readers. A wonderful exploration of home and belonging.
