I am scared that I do not belong in
a Middle Eastern restaurant
in the middle of America.
I am scared that the only place
in Middle America that I belong
is a Middle Eastern restaurant.
This started out pretty generic, but there's some true power running through this that shines through towards the end. There's something very intense in the easy language Warge uses.
It is hard to think
in two languages
when your feet are freezing.
Outstanding read. Delves into concepts of family, self identity, culture, bias, friendship — all in the space of embracing the wrenched stereotypes placed upon individuals.

what do you MEAN it isn't normal to read an entire book on the verge of tears
“Every food has a label.I never do this; I never give a book a 10 out of 10.
It is sorted and assigned.
Just like I am no longer
a girl.
I am a Middle Eastern girl.
A Syrian girl.
A Muslim girl.
Americans love labels.
They help them know what to expect.
Sometimes, though,
I think labels stop them from
thinking.”
Honestly, I’m speechless, because Other Words for Home has no flaws that I see, meaning I can only call it perfect.
I thought I would never discover my perfect book. But here I am, stunned by the simple yet complex beauty of this middle-grade story.
It goes without saying, but: Everyone. Needs. To. Read. This.

Excellent book to read when a kiddo encounters hate and how to be a good friend. Also a great book to teach kids about immigration and how to have empathy.
Such a good book to start the year!
Jude had to fly to America leaving her hometown in Syria, her Baba, her brother Issa who went missing, and her best friend Fatima, to accompany her pregnant Mama searching for a safer place to live. They lived with her uncle Mazin's family.
While there were still racism, Islamophobia, and people who think that Middle Easterner or Muslims are terrorist, I'm glad that Jude lived in an environment that wasn't so harsh to her. That she found friends who accepted her, a warm family, and a not-so-bad cousin who actually is a nice girl, multicultural school and nice teachers.
Her story somehow gives me hope, that we can still be shining wherever we are as long as we are brave. And I like the author's saying,

"No one ever grows poor from giving. That sharing what you have does not make what you have worth any less. And generosity is really just another word for love. So let’s work on giving more love to others as well as to ourselves."
