I don‘t know what to rate this book because I had a totally different expectation what this book would be. I was going in the book thinking I would get a „classic“ summer camp slasher kind of horror / thriller book BUT on the other hand I kind of liked the direction the book took so yeah I’m kind of indecisive about that.

It feels like the author just wanted to write her own version of The Final Girls Support Group, and I hated that book, and I might hate this one even more. Why do authors fall back on the “woman is crazy/going crazy” trope when they wanna have a “surprising” twist rather than just write a satisfying mystery/conspiracy with a rewarding resolution? I could see the ending coming from over a hundred pages away and it was even cheaper and slap-dash than I expected. Fuck this book.

Got an arc from work
So skimming a lot of other reviews it seems like the things people had the most issues with were the messy relationship and the pacing. I didn’t mind the messy codependency as much as some people did, even if I was like “girly there’s so many things wrong here” and perhaps I didn’t notice the slow build up because I read most of this in the span of one slow day but I do feel like the ending was too abrupt. I wasn’t really sure what it was going for? At first I thought it was gonna be like that episode of SVU where the girl’s hypnotherapist convinces her she has false memories and winds her up to explode but that didn’t seem to have any follow through? A really shitty depiction of trauma/mental illness making someone act like that? Damn I hope that wasn’t supposed to be the takeaway. A commentary on how easily people get sucked into cults? Maybe but the ending was so abrupt that if that’s the case I feel like we should’ve had MORE. I’m not saying every book as to have a moral but I think I would’ve liked it to have more of a takeaway than “hey would that be fucked up or what?”
I enjoyed a lot of this, in a “oh you two are so messy this cannot end well I’m gonna get the popcorn and see what happens” sort of way, I just would’ve liked more of a conclusion
