The first half of the book felt really fresh and exciting. it went a bit off the rails though - especially towards the end. The first half was a lot of character building - though I have to say a lot of the figures did feel a little stereotypical. I kept waiting for something other than gender essentialism to happen, but it really did not explore that at all. Overall, a fun read but with a disappointing ending.

I wish I could give half stars. I really liked the premise and concept. It was thought provoking and carried a strong message, no doubt. But it lacks a strong compelling narrative component, something emotional/relatable to identify with which kept me from getting “into it” the way I do with most other novels. I found it interesting enough to keep going, just felt like it was missing something.

I’m rating this 3.5 stars with mixed feelings (and rounding up because truncating feels too mean). The toxicity of power is an interesting topic, one that the book explores in ways I hadn’t considered. However, the story lacked the emotion that I’m looking for in any work of fiction. I didn’t particularly care about any character, so it felt sterile. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but I don’t regret the read.
