I honestly found parts of this book incredible but only one character redeeming. The story is disjointed and confusing at times. I do think if you like complicated political dystopian sci-fi you will enjoy this book.

Well written, but just not for me. I can see the parallels between our own human history and this fictional history, but this book just made me uncomfortable. It's a very intriguing plot and the characters are interesting. I had a hard time with the violence, even though it's not gratuitously graphic.
Loved the premise and a lot of the development was really good....
Wasn't thrilled about the message? Wasn't a super clear message. And I felt like the novel's frame was over compensating for the lack of point to the book by kind of laboriously offering a commentary on it. Which was necessary due to its opacity, although it shouldn't have been.
I also felt like Alderman could have done more with the premise. The novel specifically began in an already inhabited and functioning world, but developed as if little had preceded it. I don't know. Maybe I'm just uncomfortable with her conclusions. Who's to say?

This book started at a solid five for me, but by the time I finished, it slipped to a 3 (hence the 4-star rating). Amazing concept, but the plot got messy and needlessly violent very quickly and I didn’t like the resolution. I still found this novel thought-provoking and terrifying and I applaud it for tackling the idea that “if women held the same power that men do in society, would we abuse it as terribly as they have?” Interested to see where the show goes.
