Was frustrated at first trying to figure out the structure of the fantasy society, but it winds up clicking. The spice was great!

It's a DARK romance. If the trigger warnings don't bother you, give it a go because it is a really interesting story idea. It is Repo the Generic Opera meets the Greek Gods, and I mean the real Greek gods that use humans as play things.
The characters are developed great, I truly had no idea how the book was going to end. The author mentions a happy ending in her authors note, but what that means for them is really up in the air until it happens.
There is another book being released in the series. The world is interesting, and the writing is really well done. I don't think I'll read anymore in the series, but I will check out more from this author.

Trigger warnings from the book: gore, maiming, cremation, dismemberment, decapitation, non-com drugs, oppressive ruling body, hunting humans for sport, ritual sacrifice, non-sexual public defilement of a corpse, public execution, murder, blood, attempted drowning, dubious consent, reverse glory hole, impact play, knife play, blood play, exhibitionism, anonymous sex, bondage.

Thank you so much to Good Girls PR & Naomi Loud for the ARC!!

This was a true enemies to lovers story and I really enjoyed the complete hatred between Wolfgang & Mercy at the beginning and watching them give in to each other. By the end I was picturing Gomez & Morticia Addams- so obsessed with each other it makes you disgusted and jealous all at the same time. All of the spicy scenes were insanely hot. Especially how they *ahem* first connected… ⚫️

“So much has happened since then. So much has happened between us. And here we are now. At the very crescendo of our forbidden dance. A dance macabre, where the threat of our own deaths did not even stop us.”

Pravitia gives me sin city vibes, it’s a city founded on dark sins and desires. The night clubs, and night club activities were HOT. I know this is described as morally black and very dark, and while I agree there was a lot of murder of innocent people, it wasn’t dark in the way that some books are. Maybe because of the fantasy/paranormal aspect? Idk how to explain it.

“My ruin,” I groan deeply, my forehead pressed to hers. “You look divine. A goddess amongst mortals. The entire city is undeserving to even lay eyes on you.”

I loved how unhinged all of the characters are and I truly cannot wait to read more about Gemini and the rest of the six ruling families. This book was delicious.

This was such a captivating read! I haven't read a book before with morally black MMCs, and the way Naomi Loud has them interact so has you hoping they end up together. From two feuding families in Pravitia, Mercy Crèvecoeur and Wolfgang Vainglory find themselves bound together and forced to follow old rules and laws that prevent them from getting what they truly want. The gothic vibes and how romance is woven in with violence and traditions had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

🌹: I so wanted to see what was going to happen with Mercy and Wolfgang! The world was so interesting, and I loved the supporting families, and hope we get to see more of them in the next book!

🥀: I feel like the world-building could have been stronger, I found myself a little lost at times. At the beginning I thought it felt the writing/dialogue tipped towards melodramatic at times (but came to realize that that style reflected the characters and the world well!)

Tropes & Tags: enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract, morally black mmcs, touch her and die, forced proximity, magical realism, forbidden romance, opulment MMC and grumpy FMC, murder as foreplay - this is a dark romance so please mind the triggers!

Thank you to GoodGirlsPR for the e-ARC!

If you like dark romances, then you will like this book. In this world, we have gods ruling the city through different families, and every 19 years the gods decide which family is in charge and so on. There are many rules the heirs have to follow, like not being intimate with another heir, but they have a lot of freedom. Our two leads are Mercy and Wolfgang and they both want to rule. Somehow they are both supposed to lead the city together per the gods, which has never been done before. The kicker is that they have a lot of chemistry together, especially inside the bedroom but they are supposed to be forbidden from being intimate. They both know how to kill and do it whenever they need to, and Mercy represents the god of death. So, there are multiple attempts of murder and blood galore.

The nicknames between the couple and the other heirs are entertaining. You can make guesses on who the future pairs might be.

Some quotes that I liked:
“I pray when death beckons you home, I am there to witness it. I will be the first to dance on your grave.”

“Desperate wolf, wanting the one thing he can’t have.”

“What makes you think I want anything to do with a feral creature like you?”

I’ve probably said this after every book of Naomi’s that I’ve read, but this is truly a fucking masterpiece!!! I went in with high hopes because I’ve loved every single book of theirs, but I didn’t think Bastian and Lucy from Was I Ever Free could be topped….. Yet here I am, kicking my feet and squealing over how much I loved Mercy and Wolfgang. It was equal parts dark and spicy and make no mistake, they are both pretty awful people who have no regard or care for anyone else but themselves and the gods they worship, but I am so obsessed with them.

I loved the world building/aesthetic and thought the premise involving the ruling families, the heirs and the gods was really fun!!!. I also really loved the buildup between Mercy and Wolfgang going from absolutely LOATHING each other and wishing they could kill the other to fighting and wanting each other but not being able to have each other to their obsession and want and need for the other. Mercy’s stoic, unemotional wall coming down and her heart softening to allow Wolfgang in and him in turn, being this egotistical ass who becomes more obsessed with her than with himself???  It absolutely floored me and blew me away (and made me cry I admit 😭); it was so dark and kinda fucked up but beautiful.

The spice was hot. No spoilers but the scene in the club after the heirs are drugged….. I will not be taking any comments at this time (it was so good)(more of this please). Also the mirror scene at the end… 🥵🥵🥵🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻

I have no other notes other than I 1000000000% recommend this. It’s not a want but a need for more people to read this ASAP and come scream about it with me 🖤

I am so excited about this universe that Naomi had created and already can’t wait for the next book!!! Thank you so much to the author and Good Girls PR for the free ARC 🖤

I loved the world building of this story, and the unhinged MC’s. Really unique magic/Gods, dark as hell characters, and the spice was spicy hot! While this first book was heavy on the dark romance and I would have loved a little more plot, but knowing the second book is on the way has me super pumped to continue this series!
