I went into Misery thinking I knew what was going to happen. I thought I knew the story, but I was wrong from the very beginning. For some reason I expected this book to be a nonstop thriller, but to my surprise it’s actually quite a slow burn. Much like the experience that Paul Sheldon faced, we are lured time and time again into this false sense of security. There are long stretches where not much happens, but then the twisted mind of Annie Wilkes snaps and instills a new level of fear. This is very much a psychological horror. Although Annie maliciously mutilates Paul physically, the real horror is how she breaks his mind. Despite the simpleminded facade, she is an evil genius. A must read
