This book is very descriptive and really well written. I was super intrigued the whole time and was shook when Rebecca said that they were in Mrs Polk’s house and she was tied up downstairs in the basement. The penultimate chapter felt so chaotic, Eileen was on a mission of trying to impress and pander to Rebecca, whilst Rebecca was on a mission of her own, to get revenge for one of her students… it felt odd that they were clearly on such different pages and as a reader we only get Eileen’s perspective. I needed more context for Rebecca’s character. From this point in the book (the ending) it got a lot worse for me… to introduce such a violent and horrific and upsetting story about what Lee Polk went through at the very end, and treat it with such nonchalance, felt a bit problematic.

Did Eileen tie up Rebecca and leave her in her dad’s basement? Why did she not leave Mrs Polk in her dad’s house after shooting her and framing her dad for the murder like she planned? Even though we learned so much about Eileen as a person, I still had no idea what her intentions were.

I don’t know. Every once in a while Eileen would say something super relatable, and then she’d follow that up with something really weird and fucked up. It felt like this was just written to see how weird it could be while remaining cool, except that it wasn’t cool. Def not my fav from Ottessa

eileen is like the quintessential girl loser. she sucks, and because of that, she can be so relatable, but she’s also deeply flawed. as a girl, i can empathize with her self loathing, insecurity, and rage. she kinda gives off the vibes of A24’s pearl meets brand new city by mitski. however,  the ending of this books feels very rushed and underdeveloped. the climax doesn’t occur until the 85% mark, and things move very quickly afterwards. i just yearned for more answers.

I am a fan of Moshfeghs writing Style and characterisation of her female protagonists (or antagonists depending on who you ask).
I like exploring the mind of Eileen and just wished that at times there was a deeper exploration into things like her relationship with her mother, her relationship with men, her as a child etc.
Nonetheless I enjoyed the book and really did not see the ending coming and the change of pace in the narrative.
