there's stilted dialogue, stilted prose, and stilted execution, though none of which are so bad as to be deal breakers. kitty's story is lush and captivating while the more modern parts of the story are one dimensional. there's so much to love here, the secrets and the ways they torture the characters' relationships, and i enjoyed reading it, which is the most important thing, but oh boy was it painful to read those lines of dialogue that sounded like nothing human people would say.

I LOVED the Hazel and Kitty chapters, but everything set in the present fell flat for me. It was definitely a slow burn, and I didn't feel super invested until an hour or two into the audiobook.

This was a truly interesting read. The narrative coming from the perspective of black women in history is something we do not have enough of.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but I agree with all the other reviewers that the historical parts of this book were fab but the modern day stuff just felt unnecessary. I would say the overall story is worth going through the unnecessary stuff though.
Also - can someone PLEASE tell authors that eyes do not change color based on moods? It is just physically impossible. They are not like the mood rings you buy in middle school. I almost put the book down forever when I read that nonsense.
