This is a great book, solid in its plot and well written. It also delves into a topic that is part of our history as a society and the black experience in the United States. There is glamour and beauty in the book that also reveals a deep emotional revelation of what it means to be a black woman in the United States, historically and in the present day. Without revealing too much of the plot; I do wonder if the mystery of the identity of the titular character’s connection with present day characters limits the books storytelling potential. Would the reader have viewed the character’s choices differently? Could a more profound story be told without the distraction? Nevertheless, a good read and would recommend.

Please explain to me why there needs to be 30 female characters with the exact same personality. (Don’t even get me started on Elise) Good plot but too many characters. I REALLY wanted to like this one :(
I absolutely loved this book and it opened my eyes to a part of history I didn’t really think of. This deserves to be made into a movie. Highly recommend!
this book was so so so good but there were just little things in it that irked me but overall i highly recommend the story is so good i just fell right into it and didn’t want to put it down
