While the focus on Venezuela’s political unrest was an interesting history that I am not familiar with, this book was just too slow paced. The main character was boring and unlikeable. The narrative alternated between past & present in weird halting and confusing jumps. The writing was overly metaphorical and came across as trying too hard. I think the actual story had potential but this missed the mark.

The storytelling is incredibly immersive and engaging, which is facilitated by the first person narrative and the switching between the past and the present, causing a modern stream of consciousness narrative exposing the horrors, but also the past beauty of Venezuela and of the life of Adelaida Falcon. However, this manner of storytelling also has its limitations. Although there are many characters in this book, all the ones that are portrayed in a complex and engaging manner are well-educated middle class people, leaving me hungry for the perspectives of those who did not benefit from that wealth and social status before the revolution. In fact I find the characters that fall into that category easily dismissed into caricatures. Beyond that critisism though, the book is a wonderful read and if you are interested in this manner of storytelling I definitely recommend it.
