Who knew that finding a story with an Evil Queen was so hard these days? Most Evil Queens get amazing backstories, making them a lot less evil, or they are written out of stories all together. However, I really needed a story with an Evil Queen for my reading challenge and then I remembered that I probably needed a Snow White retelling. The search engine came with this one and since I already read Ash & Ella and loved it, I was quite excited to read this one.
What I liked about this second book is that it really adds a lot to the fairytale. I remember the first story also doing that, but here it seems like the author not only added more magic and more backstory, but also more world. I'm normally not a big fan of road-trips and quests, but I quite enjoyed exploring this fantasy world alongside our main characters. This book had so much to offer! Fae, Dragons, Giants...
On top of that it gives both Snow White and her prince the chance to be heroes. Since this story kept the cornerstones of the original Snow White fairytale, like the evil queen, the magic mirror, the comb and the apple, the prince at some point had to wake Snow White with a kiss from her slumber. However, Last made sure that Snow White also had a few moments to shine, making clear that she eventually was the one saving her kingdom from the Evil Queen.
I also, just like in the first book, really liked all the magic in this book! It made the playing field a little more equal, but it also created loads of opportunities to give the Evil Queen a little more motivation for being Evil than her just being jealous because Snow White is prettier. Although, luckily for my reading challenge she wasn't redeemed or given such a good motivation that it was hard to call her really evil.
I also bought the other books in the series. I'm excited to get to them!
