A cool topic to explore, though I'm not sure it was done as well as it possibly could have been. Particularly I found it difficult to delineate between historical events and biblical stories being recounted. The authors didn't quite make clear what was what, and didn't spend much time explaining what evidence there is besides what wound up becoming the New Testament for anything they're saying. Despite that, the content was fascinating, I was especially interested to learn that the early precursor groups to Christianity and the Judaism of that period were so intertwined, I was under the impression that there was an immediate rift between the two.

An overview of scholarship around the Jesus movements of the first 200 years after Jesus' death, After Jesus is a series of articles organized by themes. Each article is written by a different person, and is a combination of history, sociology, political science, linguistics, and archeology. It describes life under Roman occupation and the terror and violence inflicted daily, while people struggled to survive and form communities in both conventional and unconventional ways. One of the things that is clear throughout: there was not one unified group of people who called themselves Christians, with a clear leader and a consistent theology and practice.
I was intrigued by the ideas and information, but found the large number of authors created a feeling that I was not reading a book. It was more like attending a conference, with some things being repeated or presented from different perspectives, some pieces very focused on a narrow subject while others were wide in scope, and the presenters being unsure of what their audience already knows.
