Switching between the 1950s and 2016, this book tells the story of two women trying to find their way in a world determined to keep them down and the twists along the way.
Overall, the story just kind of fell flat for me. It had some good parts, but at the end of the day, it just left me feeling kind of meh.

3.75 is more accurate. 3 would be too low because the 3s are just meh but it’s not quite a 4 because of the unrealistic assumption the antagonist made about 3/4 of the way through the book. That just put a big damper on the story.
Loved the dual storytelling and the use of a real place to give it such a great feel.
Wow! Such a good book! I highly recommend it.
I loved the 1952 portions. I love the historic research. I really liked Rose. I liked how her story left her in a good place, but not all tied up in a bow.
I want more!

Ugh! So disappointing! The last several chapters were a chore to read. Just uninteresting. Felt like the story and characters were never really developed.

I thought this was pretty good, and I especially loved learning about the history of the Barbizon.
I guess I didn't realize this was more of a thriller than historical fiction, so that was a bummer for me. But I thought the characters were pretty interesting and I enjoyed the writing.
I think I'd recommend it, and I'd be curious to read more by Davis. I'm definitely interested in reading more about the history of the Barbizon!

I love that the chapters switch back and forth between characters and decades. A decent mystery with likable characters.
As a debut, this is a pretty solid first book. I have, however, read the author's second and third book then going back to read her first one, "The Dollhouse" is just an average read, unfortunately.
But I devoured the minor or less known history of the old New York. The author brings her readers to the glamorous Barbizon Hotel, a.k.a."The Dollhouse," back in the 50s. And references of some renowned jazz musicians and their drug problems are quite interesting. Overall, "The Dollhouse" is not spectacular but a decent read. 3.5 stars.
