I feel like the thing about Fiona Davis’ books is that the stories are great in theory but the execution isn’t spectacular. This one was no different. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy reading them.

I could’ve excused some of the contrivances if the writing had been given some room to breathe. The Barbizon is at one point described as being its own character/being, yet we never truly slow down enough to absorb any of its supposed character. The same happens with Rose’s LI: he’s just a hunky piece of cardboard I never got attached to because for some reason we’re always speeding through the dialogue with no room to dwell on anything other than surface level physical attraction.

Some of the twists were mildly interesting and the premise was truly fun. I hope this author has grown since writing this, given that this is their debut novel.
